ETIAS is not a Visa.

ETIAS is not a Visa - But it's very similar.

Starting in 2024 U.S. visitors (of any age) travelling to most of Europe will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) travel authorization. You may also see it referred to as the Schengen visa application.

The application process is designed to be fast - with immediate response for some, 14-30 days for people that need additional screening (possibly requiring an interview). Cost is minimal (under $10) but a successful government program will likely lead to rising cost.

ETIAS will be tied to your passport, and entry will be denied into "Schengen Area" countries (27 countries in the European Union with Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus evaluating membership) if not completed prior to travel.

Where to Apply

Our next European Trip will be in 2024. We will update this post once we have tried out the system. We certainly want to understand the rules around financial sufficiency

"Generally, there are several recognised ways to prove your financial sufficiency for a Schengen visa application:

  • A personal bank statement indicating your financial movements
  • Credit card
  • Cash
  • Traveller’s cheques
  • Payslips
  • Proof of employment
  • Supporting document to attest sponsor’s readiness to cover your expenses during your stay
  • Proof of prepaid accommodation
  • Document about accommodation in private
  • Proof of prepaid transport
  • Other"
